Complete guide to make money selling domain names

Earn money with a domain name

You don't have to be the next super search engine to start making money online. Thousands of people earn money by investing in domain names. They do this by buying, selling, stockpiling, or developing domains to increase their value.

What is a domain?

A domain name is an Internet property that exchanges land for virtual property. Like real estate, a domain name can be sold to be sold for a profit, generate residual income, and grow to increase its value.

In simpler terms, a domain is the "name" of a website. Therefore, the domain of my website is “almotken.com”.

According to Wikipedia, a domain is "an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control within the Internet."

You can think of domain names in the same terms as your home address. When your house has a street number and a road, a domain name uses the same structure to search and locate a website. Just like at home, there can only be one address. Each domain is unique. Since there can only be one address, this is where domain change comes into play.

What is domain name buying and selling?

Domain names can be extremely lucrative, and companies (or individuals) are willing to pay top dollar for some of the top names. For example, a domain with a name like "weightloss.com" could be worth much more than another domain. Typically, shorter domains will be worth much more than longer domains. More on this below!

Domain hosting business is the process where you buy a domain and sell it for a profit. The price for which you can sell your domain is completely arbitrary.

Buy and sell domains

Buying a good domain name and selling it over time is a common way domain investors make a profit. Most good .com names are already registered and do not need to be processed from scratch.

If you are currently looking for a registered domain, there are several options to consider:
  • Domain Marketplace / Auction : A domain marketplace is a place where other domain owners list their domains for sale. They can be purchased through a bidding/counter-offer system or through auction to compete with other buyers. Our expired auction is a good place to start.
  • Domain Agent – If you find your preferred domain name, you can hire a domain agent and try to protect it. Why are you doing this? First, you can keep your personal information private to avoid inflating the seller's price. As a second point, you can save time without having to negotiate a price or make a payment. Third, you can use the skills of a broker to ensure that you pay the correct amount for your domain.
  • Direct contact with the owner – You can contact the owner of the desired domain directly and exclude the middle person. You need to do a whois lookup to find the owner's contact information.
The most popular and generic domains of the most popular tld (.com, .net, .org) are probably registered. If you want to register a new domain for sale later, be prepared to spend a lot of time and effort developing the domain. Any domain name can be valuable. One way to add value to a domain name is to add useful content to drive traffic to your site.

Ownership Domain: For-Profit Parking

Many domain investors own hundreds or even thousands of domain names. They make money by hosting these domains, placing PPC ads (eg Google AdSense) and making a profit. This strategy, called domain parking money, is based on which domains receive traffic. Typing traffic determines the behavior of users who type the domain name directly into the browser's address bar to access the website instead of using a search engine.

domain development

It takes more time to benefit from your domain, but one useful way is to build an entire website around it. It is understandable that increasing the value of a domain requires more effort than a buy/sell or parking strategy. Adding value to the domain can include things like market research, content creation, and product development, depending on what you want to do. In addition to the domain development business, the technical requirements to run a website must be met. However, there are several online resources (open source software, outsourcing, etc.) that make it easier for those who are not technically comfortable.

How much does a domain name cost?

Before you start making money selling domain names, you need to consider your budget. The good news is that registering a domain name can be extremely affordable. Typically, you will pay between $10 and $25 per year to register your domain. You can purchase a domain for less than $10 at HostGator!

Because buying a domain is so affordable, changing domains can be quite a hassle for those who don't have a lot of money.

Where can I buy a domain name?

There are many registrars available to purchase domain names. Some are less expensive than others. Some of my favorite domain registrars are NameCheap and Hostgator.

How to make money with domain names

Now that you know what domain buying and selling is, are you ready to get started? Let me show you how!

Find strong domain names to sell

The first step in reversing a domain is finding the right domain. This can take hours of research and a bit of good old fashioned luck.

To find a domain name, go to any domain registrar and search based on the topics you think would be a good candidate.

Some domain investors have software that helps analyze a domain name to reduce the time it takes to examine a domain.

Once you've found a good domain name, shop with a registrar. Typically, maintaining a domain costs around $10 a year. Not sure if your domain is a good candidate? Don't worry, I'll help you decide below.

Sell domain name

Selling domain names can be as difficult as finding them. There are a few platforms where you might consider listing your domain for sale. One of my favorites is Flippa. They will get a percentage of the sale so keep this in mind before you quote, but the process is relatively easy.

Another option is to sell the domain privately, but this can be more difficult for those without connections. You can do this in several ways.

The first is by creating a landing page for your domain, where you can enter your contact information and the price of the domain (if desired).

I highly recommend using a landing page builder to create attractive landing pages so visitors can easily see some of the information about the domain.

TIP: By using a landing page, you can also list any other related domains you may have for sale. This way, even if the buyer isn't interested in the domain you landed on, they might consider buying another from your portfolio.

The second method is to make your WHOIS information public so that others can see who the domain is registered to and some basic contact information. If you choose to make this information public, you may encounter more queries and spam emails, so please keep that in mind.

Finally, listing your domain for sale in public Facebook groups could be another way to potentially sell your domain name.

How difficult is it to resell domain names?

The hardest part of changing domains is finding the right domain to buy. This is usually the step that requires the most time. Once you have a system in place, switching domains can become a lot easier.

As you gain more experience with domain switching, you should get a good idea of which domain names tend to sell for a higher price than others.

In general, however, changing domains is relatively easy and can be completed from anywhere, making it a seamless and stress-free job.

Tips to find the perfect domain to invest

Here are some tips to help you find the right domain name to make money by changing domains.

Buy an expired domain

An expired domain is a domain where the person or company that registered the domain stopped paying for it. After this occurs, the name will expire and will usually go up for auction. You can then bid on expired domains to buy.

Why would you want an expired domain name?

Some reasons. The first benefit is the name itself. It is possible to find expired high-value domains.

The second reason you might consider buying an expired domain is for its SEO value. Just because a domain name is expired doesn't mean the links pointing to that domain are gone. These links can be extremely powerful in terms of SEO. By redirecting the domain to another URL, you will pass a significant part of the link juice to the new domain.

How can you measure the amount of link juice from an expired domain?

There are several tools you can use and they all have metrics to determine the SEO value of a domain. Two of my favorite tools, Moz and Ahrefs, have scores associated with a mastery rating on how much link juice they have.

Moz first founded the term “Domain Authority” which is meant to represent how easy it will be for your website or domain to rank in Google. The range is on a 100-point scale, with 100 being the highest rating available. The rating considers several factors, including backlinks, domain age, and more.

So what is a good domain authority?

This answer is completely subjective, but I think a domain with a domain authority of 20 or higher would be a great candidate to switch to. This domain should have good ranking potential on Google and other search engines.

Warning: it's not perfect.

Buying expired domains to invest can be a great way to increase your earning potential and diversify your domain portfolio.

Find short domains

Shorter domain names are inherently more valuable.

Because?

Because they are easier to write and remember. That said, you may find that these domains are more expensive at first, so you'll want to determine how much you can sell before you make your purchase.

If you find a short domain name, it's best to buy it before someone else does. These domains can be recovered in a matter of seconds, so it's worth a try.

Most short domains have already been purchased with the .com extension, however as other extensions become more popular this presents a huge opportunity.

For example, a short domain like "howto.com" can be a top-level domain even if it doesn't end in ".com."

Buy local domains

Small local businesses pop up all the time. By purchasing common domain names for these businesses, you can sell them to local small business owners who want to get started.

For example, a domain like "publicidadmexico.com" can be a great domain to buy because of its local appearance and is very easy to remember.

Local domains tend to work well for SEO because it tells search engines where your business is located, without the need to scan the page for content.

Find new unused domains

Another great way to find a domain to invest in is to browse what's available. Sometimes you can land on a domain gold mine. Recently, I bought a domain "savemoneyquick.com". I haven't sold it yet, but I paid less than $10, so I think some changes are possible.

Sometimes you just have to get lucky to change domains. When purchasing a domain name that currently has no value, you may be wondering how much the domain name can grow as it becomes scarce.

Select to buy .COM extensions

Today you can buy many extensions from different websites. If you have seen a website that ends in ".co" or ".net", these extensions are usually purchased if the ".com" extension has already been used.

Purchasing a .com domain name will increase your chances of selling your domain.

The downside to these domain names is that they tend to be more expensive to buy at auction. However, it is likely that it will be more profitable each time you invest in a domain with a .com extension.

Buy “branded” domains

Some domains are easier to bookmark than others. For example, a domain titled "brokenhearts.com" would be easier to brand than a domain with random letters and numbers like "21clothes.com."

These brand domains are perfect for investing. When buying domains, try to find those that are easily identifiable as a business or service.

These domains tend to be a bit more lucrative if you can find the right one. You can think of this method as “high risk reward”. Though at the end of the day, you're only risking $10 per year.

Is it legal to buy and sell domain names?

Absolutely! There is nothing wrong with buying and selling domains for profit. There are many domain users who earn a full time income by buying and selling domains.

The only legal issue you might face is if you buy a domain that is obviously related to a current business.

For example, if for some reason Apple forgot to renew your domain name, you could buy the name, although due to UDRP laws, you could face a legal battle that could cost a fortune.

Ultimately, you won't face any legal issues as long as you don't buy a domain name that is obviously copyrighted.

How much money can you make buying and selling domains?

Some people have made hundreds of thousands of dollars launching just one domain, yes ONE. Domains like z.com, toys.com, and slots.com sold for over $5 million, just for the domain name!

Now, there's a good chance you won't come across any of these domains in 2021, yet the ability to make money still exists. Even if you can buy a domain name for $10 and sell it for $100, that's a profit of $90. Multiply that by 100 domains and you can easily make an extra $9,000 a year from this side hustle.

Domain change can be as profitable as possible. Every time you invest a domain name, you can reinvest your earnings and buy another domain to invest.

Conclusion:

To get started, you'll first need to find a domain name to buy at a good price. Then you will need to find potential buyers to sell your domain. You can sell domains in a number of ways, including auctioning on websites like Flippa or you can choose to sell them privately. Many domains can be sold in less than a few weeks, making it a quick way to earn a few hundred dollars each month.

Domain investing is a great low risk hobby for just about anyone and I would 100% recommend it for anyone with even the slightest amount of technical skill.
